Covid-19 and the Great Reset

Research has shown that COVID-19 has transferred a competitive advantage to companies that have already made the transition to industry 4.0. Cities and towns can use the Yaswedo Platform augment their workforce by crowdsourcing inspections.

In 2020, the largest health and economic crisis since the 1918 Flu forced cities across the world to implement stay-at-home orders to protect their citizens. As vaccines start to become available and stay-at-home orders are being lifted, governments around the world are implementing regulations that would allow businesses to re-open safely. Cities are coupling these regulations with steep fines to ensure that businesses are in compliance.

Companies subject to these safe reopening regulations include restaurants, hair and nail salons, massage parlors, barber shops, pest management companies, gyms, and many others. Citizens want to go back to work and school, start traveling, and gather in restaurants theaters, parks, and sports stadiums again. In order to safely reopen, cities will have to make huge investments in their workforce (e.g., inspectors, citation officers, etc.) in order to ensure that businesses meet regulations and can safely reopen.

We looked at a number of enhanced cleaning checklists published by AirBnB, Zenefits, CDC, FDA. the Brookings Institute, and McKinsey to design an inspection form that is a good starting point to evaluate a business in preparation for re-opening.

  1. Does the establishment adhere to community Covid-19 hours of operation?

  2. Is Signage Visible?

  3. Hand Wash Stations?

  4. Social Separation Markers?

  5. One-way directional Traffic Flow Arrows?

  6. Non-porous Barrier?

  7. Mask Wearing?

  8. Ventilation Type?

  9. Website, public announcement, health and safety policy?

  10. Customer Temperature Log?

  11. Water Fountain Closed?

  12. Vulnerable Population Hours (e.g., Seniors)?

  13. Other Observations?

  14. Issue Ticket?

Civic Leaders (i.e., mayors, governors) must do whatever is necessary to get their cities back up and running as soon as they safely can. We will also need plans in place to prepare for future pandemics.

Traditionally, implementing such an inspection is a long-drawn-out process involving hundreds of developer hours comprising the development of a database, preparation and printing of forms, and the employment of a workforce specifically dedicated to, just, transcribing paper forms into an electronic medium. Even then, the result of this would-be inspectors going to their office in the morning, picking up forms, going from business to business filling out the form, and then coming back to the office at the end of the day to transcribe the paper form into the database. Certainly, all of this can be implemented via existing offerings (i.e., AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Firebase, SAP, or a custom on-prem solution).

Technologies of the ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution (or Industry 4.0) can help. However, the development cost of implementing such a solution is not feasible for all but the largest of cities and towns around the world. This is where Yaswedo can help.

The Yaswedo Platform (Yaswedo) gives businesses and their field teams the power of an Uber, Lyft, Taskrabbit, DoorDash, GrubHub, etc. That is, yaswedo is designed to help businesses of all types jumpstart their industry 4.0 journey. We recently released a custom form creator and below I will look at how yaswedo’s custom form creator can be used create custom form for inspectors.

Creating Custom Forms for your Inspectors

With yaswedo's form builder (still in beta) you can build custom forms comprising section headers, checkboxes, textfields, and a notes field. Below is a sample form that we created based on a theoretical checklist described above. Please note that yaswedo's form builder is still in beta and as we receive feedback from our customers, we will be looking to implement additional controls such as listboxes and multi-option checkboxes.

{
    "Form": [
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Authorized Hours of Operation?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Signage Visible?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Hand Wash Stations?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Social Separation Markers?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "One-way Directional Traffic Flow Arrows?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Non-porus Barrier?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Mask Wearing?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Public Announcement?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Customer Temperature Log?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Water Fountain Closed?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Checkbox",
            "Key": "Vulnerable Population Hours?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Textfield",
            "Key": "Ventilation Type?",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Notes",
            "Key": "Other Observations",
            "Value": null
        },
        {
            "Type": "Textfield",
            "Key": "Issue Ticket? ($100, $500, $1000, Other)",
            "Value": null
        }
    ]
}

By using the built-in custom form builder, you can create any kind of custom form and add it to your job. In the form above, each control is uniquely identified with a key and the resulting form is appropriately rendered on the user's device based on the end user’s native device rendering rules. What that means is very little training required.

Using yaswedo with existing Interaction Systems

The yaswedo platform can also be used to augment existing in-house "interaction centers" such as SAP CRM - Interaction Center or other SQL Server based service ticket management systems. In this way an existing industry 2.0 company can quickly transition itself into an industry 4.0 by imbuing its services with insights and advantages available to Silicon Valley unicorns.

In a recent study published by McKinsey & Company titled "An unequal recovery: Disparities in US unemployment" the authors noted that "[d]ata on the US workforce indicates that the economic and employment impact of the pandemic has fallen disproportionately on women, minorities, young workers, and those with lower educational attainment or income." In another study McKinsey & Company found that Covid-19 was "...a huge win for companies that had already scaled digital technologies (exhibit). Those that were still scaling faced a reality check, and 2020 was a wake-up call for those that hadn’t yet started on their Industry 4.0 journeys." In fact, even as vaccines begin to become widely available that the world will return to business as usual. So clearly it is important that cities, towns, and businesses around the world (large and small) have to start their industry 4.0 transformations as soon as possible.

In the context of Covid-19 inspections, a city/town can supplement its existing workforce using the Yaswedo Platform by deputizing their citizens as part-time inspectors. For example, a city/town could create a team on the Yaswedo Platform and create jobs to inspect the relevant businesses. In the previous example, the city/town invite citizens of their town to their team via the y3ster app. Once a citizen completes an inspection, city/town would be notified of the inspection results. The city/town could retrieve inspections results either (1) using the yaswedo webapp and downloading the data or (2) using secure APIs provided by yaswedo to organically integrate yaswedo in their existing servicing solution.

Thank you for reading. We believe that it is important to help companies reset their workflow for the post COVID economy.We are committed to working with our customers and clients to make them make the transition.[d1]For more information on yaswedo please go to www.yaswedo.com or contact me directly at marcher@yaswedo.com.
